BIOGRAPHY

Mohamed Nour, Associate Professor of Low Carbon Energy and Power Engineering, is profoundly involved in research and education pertaining to spray and combustion technologies. His work significantly contributes to the comprehension of the practical application of carbon-neutral fuels in energy systems, as well as their spray and combustion mechanisms. Nour's academic journey commenced with a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Benha University, where he established a robust foundation in alternative fuels, combustion, diesel engines, and data analysis. His early interest in carbon-neutral fuels and combustion technology prompted him to pursue a Master's degree and Ph.D. in Energy Resources Engineering at the Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology. During his Master's studies, he examined the performance of turbojet engines operated with alternative biodiesel. In his Ph.D. studies, Nour specialized in diesel engine emissions control through water injection, and the use of hydrous ethanol and anhydrous ethanol as alternative fuels in diesel engines. He employed RCEM and diesel engines with optical windows, along with various high-speed camera and laser diagnostic techniques. He proposed, manipulated, and tested a novel fuel injection strategy known as Exhaust Manifold Injection, aimed at dual fuel operation of a diesel engine fuelled with alcohols. During his Ph.D. studies (2015-2016), Dr. Nour was appointed as a visiting young researcher at Tokyo Institute of Technology, where he conducted most of his Ph.D. research at the KOSAKA-SATO laboratory.

Upon completion of his PhD, he secured a tenure position as an Assistant Professor in the Mechanical Engineering department at Benha University. There, he established the "Advanced Testing Laboratory of Biofuels," funded with 5 million EGP from STDF, Egypt. His research primarily focused on the combustion of higher alcohols in diesel engines and the thermochemical conversion of agricultural waste to produce syngas for operating a burner and small SI engine. Two years later, he joined the School of Mechanical Engineering at Shanghai Jiao Tong University as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the working group of Prof. Min Xu. He received several grants from NSFC and the China Postdoctoral Foundation. His postdoctoral research concentrated on understanding the spray and combustion mechanisms of carbon-neutral fuels in GDI engines. On January 1st, 2024, he assumed the position of Associate Professor at Benha Faculty of Engineering. Subsequently, on October 21st, 2024, he was appointed as an Associate Professor at the School of Low Carbon Energy and Power Engineering.

Dr. Nour boasts over 12 years of research experience, amassed through comprehensive studies conducted in various countries including Egypt, Japan, and China. His extensive publication record is a testament to his expertise, with over 43 peer-reviewed articles published in renowned SCI journals. These include the Proceedings of Combustion Institute, Energy Conversion and Management, Fuel, Energy, Fuel Processing Technology, Energy & Fuels, Bioresources Technology, Experimental Thermal and Fluid Science, Environmental Progress and Sustainable Energy, Biomass Conversion and Biorefinery, and Journal of Green Energy. Furthermore, he has actively contributed to numerous international conferences, such as ILASS-ASIA, SAE WCX, ASME-POWER, and ASME ICEF. In addition to his publications and conference presentations, Dr. Nour has also served as a peer reviewer for more than 25 journals within his field. He has reviewed over 200 articles for prestigious journals, including Applied Energy, Energy Conversion and Management, Proceedings of the Combustion Institute, Energy, Fuel, Science of the Total Environment, Journal of Cleaner Production, Infrared Physics and Technology, International Journal of Energy Research, and Bioenergy Research.

He has successfully secured multiple research grants in both Egypt and China. Serving as the principal investigator (PI) for a capacity-building project funded with 5 million EGP by the STDF, Ministry of Higher Education in Egypt, he established a new Advanced Testing Lab for Environment and Biofuels, completing the project in June 2019. He also led a NSFC RFIS I project as the primary PI, exploring the superheated atomization and combustion mechanisms of high-flash-point alcohol fuels. Concurrently, he participated in another project focusing on the initial breakup mechanism of flash boiling spray film bubble burst. These two projects, with a combined funding of nearly one million Chinese yuan, allowed him to investigate the fundamental mechanisms through which superheated spray can significantly enhance the potential for clean and efficient combustion in internal combustion engines. In addition to these projects, he has received funding from the China Postdoctoral Science Foundation and the Young Foreign Talent Program at SJTU. His work has been crucial in advancing academic and industrial research on the production and characterization of biofuels and new engine technologies. His research impact is demonstrated by his h-index of 22, i10-index of 28, and 1418 citations according to Google Scholar statistics.
