HUI YANG, PhD / PROFESSOR

 

Professor Yang ,a native of Taizhou, Jiangsu Province, is recognized as a Young Scholar under the National Major Talent Project, a Distinguished Expert of the "Tianchi Talent" Program as part of the "2+5" Key Talent Initiative in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, an Outstanding Female Teacher of Xuzhou City, and a University Teaching Master (Class A). She currently serves as the Deputy Director of the Jiangsu Provincial Public Technology Service Platform for Greenhouse Gas Emission Accounting and Monitoring.

Professor Yang holds numerous academic and professional leadership roles, including Deputy Chair of the Big Data and Digital Earth Science Committee of the Chinese Society for Mineralogy, Petrology, and Geochemistry; Member of the Virtual Geographic Environment Committee of the China National Committee of the International Society for Digital Earth; Deputy Chair of the Information Geography Committee of the Jiangsu Geographical Society; Member of the Youth Working Committee of the Jiangsu Geographical Society (2014–2018); Council Member of the Jiangsu University Geography Discipline Alliance; Senior Member of the China Computer Federation (CCF); Lifetime Member of the International Association of Chinese Professionals in Geographic Information Sciences (CPGIS); and a member of both IEEE and ACM.

She has led 16 provincial- and ministerial-level or above research projects, including a task under the Third Xinjiang Comprehensive Scientific Expedition Project and projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. She has authored or co-authored 89 journal articles, of which 40 are as the first or corresponding author. She holds 15 authorized national invention patents and 21 software copyrights. Her contributions have been recognized with 12 scientific research awards, including the Special Prize for Geographic Information Science and Technology Progress, the First Prize for Surveying, Mapping, and Geoinformation Science and Technology Progress in Jiangsu Province, and the First Prize for Surveying and Mapping Science and Technology in Xinjiang.

  • Professor Yang Hui has demonstrated outstanding research leadership and institutional development capabilities in the fields of Geographic Information Science, carbon monitoring, and Earth system modeling. Her leadership is primarily reflected in the following areas:

  • Construction of Research Platforms and Centers:

  • Jiangsu Province Greenhouse Gas Emission Accounting and Monitoring Technology Public Service Platform: Since 2022, serving as the Deputy Director, she has been responsible for the platform's strategic planning, technological system development, and the enhancement of its public service capabilities. The platform aims to provide an authoritative public technical service for accurate greenhouse gas accounting, dynamic monitoring, and decision support for Jiangsu Province and the nation.

  • Department of Earth Information Science, China University of Mining and Technology (CUMT): From 2020 to 2023, as the Department Chair, she was fully responsible for discipline construction, faculty development, talent cultivation, and research management. She promoted the deep integration and innovation of Earth Information Science and Technology with national strategic needs in resources, environment, and carbon neutrality.

  • Program Head for Earth Information Science and Technology: Since 2021, as the head of this national-level first-class undergraduate program, she led the development of a new engineering reform plan oriented towards the "Digital China" and "Dual Carbon" strategies, including curriculum system restructuring and practical teaching platform construction.

  • Leadership in Major Research Programs and Strategic Initiatives:

  • The Third Xinjiang Comprehensive Scientific Expedition Project: As the project leader, she chaired the sub-project "Comprehensive Assessment and Data Integration of Ecological and Environmental Impacts of Energy and Resource Development on the Northern Slope of the Tianshan Mountains." This is a large-scale, interdisciplinary, and cross-institutional comprehensive research program. She coordinated teams from ecology, environment, remote sensing, geographic information, and other fields, establishing a research system for the systematic assessment and data integration of the eco-environmental effects of regional energy development.

  • United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) International Project: As the principal investigator, she led the "International Climate Change Space Observatory Demonstration Project (OpenGCS)". This project serves as a significant example of international collaboration. She successfully organized an international team to conduct demonstration research on online monitoring of geological carbon storage using spatial information technology, enhancing China's international influence and cooperation network in this field.

  • Industry-Academia-Research Collaboration and Team Building:

  • Cultivation of Interdisciplinary Research Teams: By securing and leading a series of competitive research projects, including those from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (Youth, General, International Cooperation) and National Key R&D Program sub-projects, she successfully established and leads a stable, high-level research team integrating Geographic Information Science, remote sensing, atmospheric science, environmental engineering, and computer science. The team has developed distinctive strengths in areas such as carbon satellite data assimilation, greenhouse gas flux inversion, and multi-scale carbon cycle modeling.

  • Industrial Technology R&D and Translation: Actively promoting the application of research outcomes, she collaborated with enterprises and institutions such as Nanjing Beidou Innovation & Application Technology Research Institute and Jiangsu Institute of Geology and Mineral Resources Design. She led horizontal projects like "Assessment of Regional Terrestrial Ecosystem Carbon Sink Capacity Using a Multi-Model Coupling Approach" and "Research on Carbon Emission Monitoring and Detection Technology," translating theoretical methods into applicable technical solutions, demonstrating strong leadership in industry-academia-research collaborative innovation.

  • Teaching Reform and Talent Cultivation Hub Development: Leading several major educational reform projects funded by sources like the China University Industry-University-Research Innovation Fund, Jiangsu Province's Key Projects on Degree and Postgraduate Education Teaching Reform, and Jiangsu Higher Education Society, she is committed to exploring cultivation pathways for top innovative talents in Earth Sciences in the digital intelligence era. She has constructed an innovative talent cultivation model of industry-education integration for smart education, with related achievements receiving national-level teaching awards, highlighting her pioneering role in education and teaching reform.
